The specialty chip MAX9814 from Maxim was designed for amplifying electret microphones in situations where the loudness of the audio isn't predictable. Adaptive gain control in the amplifier quiets nearby 'loud' sounds so they don't overwhelm the amplifier lead to clipping, and it amplifies far-away quiet sounds. This amplifier has a few options you can configure with the breakout. If you want to pipe it into a Line Input, just use a 100 µF blocking capacitor in series.
