It can transport 2 to 3 orders of magnitude (100 to 1000 times) more amount of heat than a solid copper component of similar geometric dimensions. The heatpipe uses the physical effect whereby the evaporation and condensation of a liquid is converted into large quantities of energy. This physical process is also known as thermosyphon. A heatpipe is made from high-purity copper and the working medium is water. The water is distilled several times, completely degassed and demineralised. With the low amounts in a heatpipe there are no effects that are damaging to health or the environment. There are no safety considerations if the heatpipe is used correctly. Care should, however, be taken if the heatpipe is overheated. If the temperature exceeds 250 °C the pressure in the heatpipe becomes so high that it can explode.
